Profiles in Teaching

Teaching means influencing the lives of countless young people. Your dedication and hard work will be felt every day by your students. When you teach, you make a difference.

Excellence in teaching is also formally recognized. One such example is the Washington State Teacher of the Year Award. Recipients receive national recognition, including a visit with the President.

Recent Washington State Teachers of the Year

Jason A. Eng, is an elementary-school teacher at Mt. Stuart Elementary in Ellensburg. He has been named Washington State History Teacher of the Year in 2009 by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and Preserve America.  For more information on Jason A. Betsy Gottschalk, is a middle school teacher at the Assumption Catholic School in Bellingham.  She has been named Washington State History Teacher of the Year in 2008 by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and Preserve America. Andrea Peterson teaches music at Monte Cristo Elementary School in the Granite Falls School District. Not only was Ms. Peterson named Washington state’s Teacher of the Year in 2007, she was also named the National Teacher of the Year! Susan Barnard, reading and language arts teacher at Shelton’s CHOICE Alternative Schools was named Washington State’s 2006 Teacher of the Year. For information on Ms. Barnard’s career in teaching please visit the OSPI website.
